Perfect Fifths by Megan McCafferty
I have been following the Jessica Darling series since I was 15. Wow, seems so long ago! At the time, I wanted something to read while waiting for the next Harry Potter novel. I grabbed Sloppy Firsts on a whim and fell in love with it. Jessica is hilarious! I love her witty banter and thoughts.
While all the other 4 are written in a journal format (the first 3 for herself and the 4th meant for Marcus), Perfect Fifths is written in third person. Readers will be able to experience Marcus' thoughts and feelings for the first time. For anyone else that has been following the JD series, you'll understand how epic and amazing this is! I don't know about you, but I love me some Marcus Flutie!
The book is broken down into 4 parts. The first part is written in third person and involves Jessica and Marcus running into each other for the first time in years. While the novel focuses on Jessica and Marcus, it also catches you up on what all the past characters have been up to. The second part is written in a different format. It's strictly a conversation between Jessica and Marcus. Personally, this is my favorite part. I've always loved their banter. The third part consists of back to back haikus between the two. If you've been keeping up with the JD series, you'll know how important haikus truly are! And the final part goes back to the third person format. It gives you closure to a story that was first told back in 2001.
You don't have to read the past 4 books to enjoy Perfect Fifths, but I do highly recommend it. Some of the events and conversations won't make sense unless you do. And for those that have been keeping up with this series, Perfect Fifths gives you a little bit of everything from the past. Old friends, crushes-to-end-all-crushes, the "almost" road trip,"crocodile eyes", caste promises, and of course, Barry Manilow! It really is the perfect end to one of my favorite series.
