Review : Something Like Fate

Synopsis : Lani and Erin are bonded for life. One thing that connects them is their fascination of fate. Lani wonders how much of our lives has already been decided and how much we can actually influence. Since the Unknown can unexpectedly change our lives forever, how much can we really control?

From the minute Lani meets Jason, she can't deny the intense connection they share. It feels like she's known him forever. She's not sure if he feels it, too. But it doesn't matter. Because Jason is Erin's boyfriend. Lani is determined to ignore her feelings for Jason, no matter how powerful they are, rather than risk hurting her best friend.

How long can Lani keep running from the boy who might be her destiny?

In one word, Something Like Fate is adorable. Unlike some of Susane Colansanti's other novels, Something Like Fate is entirely told through Lani's POV. The book is broken down into three parts : the end of their junior year, summer and the first couple months of their senior year.

Erin and Lani have been best friend's since they were kids. Though they couldn't be more different, a past event connects them for life. I like to think of Erin as the "Popular It Girl" and Lani as the "Eco friendly Quiet Girl." A bit cliche, but nontheless true. Before the end of their junior year, Erin starts crushing over Jason. He's part of the Golden Circle and a down right great guy. While Lani has known Jason most of her life, she's never really "noticed" him. At least, not until Erin reintroduces them. From the moment Jason and Lani meet, they click. Yes, just snap your fingers. That's how fast they click. Erin encourages Lani to get to know Jason better, dig for information and see how he feels about her. Lani reluctantly agrees. As Jason and Lani start spending more time together, Lani notices she's completely falling for her best friend's boyfriend. But does he feel the same way? With Erin leaving for Summer Camp, Lani knows being alone with Jason all summer is not an option (no matter how bad she wants it).

While the theme has been done before, I still found Something Like Fate to be a fun-quick read. It has a little bit of everything. There's drama, a love triangle, forbidden love and secrets untold.

Personally, my favorite character is Blake. He's quirky, funny and just a great friend to Lani. He also deals with his own problems. Being Lani's best friend, you get bits and pieces of what Blake must deal with in his life. It's not easy being secretly gay, especially in high school. His strength really surprised me. Where some would fall, he stood with his head held high. Kuddos to you, Blake.

And swoon-worthy boys. I liked Jason. I really did. He's the stereotypical hot, sensitive guy one can easily falls for. But I didn't love him. While I get why Lani fell for him, I feel you never really get to know him. You just get the cookie cutter guy you're suppose to fall for. I like my literary crushes have more depth than that.

All in all, I enjoyed Something Like Fate. It's an easy quick read. It's not my favorite book, but it's my favorite Susane Colansanti book. Her fans will not be disappointed.
