Review: The Duff

Title: The Duff
Author: Kody Kepling
Publishes: September 7th 2010 by Little Brown/Poppy (first published 2010)
Details: Hardcover, 288 pages

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "Duffy," she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren't so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Thoughts: This book has it all: Humor, wit, a fun story line, strong-minded protag, a lovable bastard and just the right about of romance. What amazes me is how young the author is. I can't believe she's only 18. Regardless of her age, Kody writes like a pro!

Bianca may not be the prettiest girl in school, but she is smart, sarcastic and funny. She's not the type of girl to obsess over her looks. And she knows her friends are prettier than her, but it doesn't really bother her. At least, not until Wesley calls her the Duff. The Duff stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend. It's one of the most offensive things Bianca has ever head. Since then, she just can't get it out of her head. Compared to Casey and Jessica, she really *IS* the Duff.

She's not going to let him get to her though. In fact, she puts him in his place every chance she gets. Then, things seem to spin out of control. And for a control freak like Bianca, this is the worst thing that could've ever happened.

To help forget her problems, she soon beings to use Wesley as an outlet. He's actually not THAT bad of a guy. And as much as she doesn't want to admit it (to herself and her friends), she soon begins to fall for him. But how can a popular, hot man whore like Wesley ever fall for girl he deems as the Duff?

Something I loved about this book is, it's not all fluff. The Duff addresses issues teen girls face today. For example, her family is far from perfect. The more complicated the issues with her family become, the more she distances herself from her friends. And who hasn't, at one point or another, felt alone? Who hasn't had their heart broken or felt like an outsider in your own home or even with your friends?! Whether it's family problems or self image, Bianca is the kind of person every girl can easily relate to.

I must say, I adored Wesley. At times, he can be a real jerk, but then he has these one or two sweet moments that just make up for the rest. His progression as a character may of been slow, but it still really sweet. What can I say, I love arrogant-yet- sweet guys. Is he swoon worthy? Yes, ma'am!

Overall, I found The Duff to be an interesting, enjoyable, fun read. I guess you can say I luffed The Duff. I will warn younger teens to watch out because The Duff does have PG-13 language (i.e. profanity) as well as nookie. For older teens, young adults and just females in general, I recommend checking out The Duff when it hits shelves in September. It's the book everyone will be talking about, and you don't want to miss it.
