Summary: From bestselling, Printz Award-winning author Libba Bray, the story of a plane of beauty pageant contestants that crashes on a desert island.
Teen beauty queens. A "Lost"-like island. Mysteries and dangers. No access to email. And the spirit of fierce, feral competition that lives underground in girls, a savage brutality that can only be revealed by a journey into the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Oh, the horror, the horror! Only funnier. With evening gowns. And a body count.
Thoughts:Beauty Queens is unlike anything I've ever read. I don't think I've laughed so hard in ages! I love how the story flows and all the different writing techniques the author uses. You get a glimpse of what it's like to be each character, why they're in the pageant, and what they have to do to survive.
This novel is about a group of pageant contestants, who's plane crashes and leaves the surviving girls stranded on an island. The thing is, the island isn't exactly deserted, and soon, the girls will begin to discover a conspiracy unlike any other. Watch out, readers. Along the way, there will be deadly snakes, trippy unknown fruits, crazy rising waters/weather and loads of drama. It'll be grand!
My personal favorite thing about Beauty Queens are all the diverse personalities and how Libba Bray plays with some common pageant girl cliches, yet also still keeps the story very creative, witty and hysterical. Each contestant is there for their own reason, and the truth is, you can relate to each and every one of them. My personal favorite was Adina, the snarky, sarcastic one who prides herself on her intelligence. She can be judgmental, but hey, don't all the pageant girls sizing/judging the every other one, too?
Oh, and as an added bonus, the author throws in some commercials back home, each girl's pageant information sheet, and a twist to the story. Absolutely hilarious. If you need a good laugh or just something completely different than what's out there, check out Beauty Queens. It's the perfect pick me up after a hard day of work/school. Whoa, that came off a little commercial-esque, but it is!
