Title: Tempest Rising
Author: Tracy Deebs
Expected publication: May 10th 2011 by Walker Books for Young Readers
Summary:"Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance."
Thoughts:Is it just me or all these mermaid books lately surprisingly delicious? Tempest Rising is no exception. The novel is well-written with a great story line and lovable characters. You can't really ask for more than that.
Tempest Rising follows the story of young Tempest. When Tempest turns 17, she must choose whether to stay on land, with her family or follow her mother's path into the ocean and become a mermaid. Hands down the easiest choice of her life, since she has no desire whatsoever to be a mermaid. But maybe the choice was never her's to begin with. Destiny has other plans for her and soon she'll realize that she may be the key to ending a century-long underwater war of good vs. evil.
I really enjoyed reading Tempest's story. Her struggles with who is she and who she might become is one of my favorite aspects about this novel. Fear of the future is one thing I think everyone can easily relate too, but imagine having that, plus the possibility of becoming a mermaid. Did life just get more complicated? I think it did.
My favorite thing about the story, however, is the relationship between Tempest and Kai. I'm usually not a fan of insta-love, but they were just too cute for words. Kai is not only ridiculously handsome, but also dashing, kind and brave. Does he have any flaws? None come to mind. Every interaction between Tempest and Kai made my heart leap and rejoice. Swoon? I think so.
The only thing I found a bit frustrating was Tempest constantly reminding the reader that she does not want to be a mermaid. It's completely understandable. I don't know if I'd want to be a mermaid either, but saying it every couple pages became a bit tiresome.
Overall, Tempest Rising is an alluring and sometimes terrifying read. There's action, mystery, romance and even a few horrifying underwater creatures that may scare you off the beach for a couple days. For fans of Forgive My Fins and Siren, this is definitely a book you don't want to miss!
