Review + Giveaway: Tempest Rising

Title: Tempest Rising
Author: Tracy Deebs
Expected publication: May 10th 2011 by Walker Books for Young Readers
Source: ARC

Summary:"Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her—and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance."

Thoughts:Is it just me or all these mermaid books lately surprisingly delicious? Tempest Rising is no exception. The novel is well-written with a great story line and lovable characters. You can't really ask for more than that.

Tempest Rising follows the story of young Tempest. When Tempest turns 17, she must choose whether to stay on land, with her family or follow her mother's path into the ocean and become a mermaid. Hands down the easiest choice of her life, since she has no desire whatsoever to be a mermaid. But maybe the choice was never her's to begin with. Destiny has other plans for her and soon she'll realize that she may be the key to ending a century-long underwater war of good vs. evil.

I really enjoyed reading Tempest's story. Her struggles with who is she and who she might become is one of my favorite aspects about this novel. Fear of the future is one thing I think everyone can easily relate too, but imagine having that, plus the possibility of becoming a mermaid. Did life just get more complicated? I think it did.

My favorite thing about the story, however, is the relationship between Tempest and Kai. I'm usually not a fan of insta-love, but they were just too cute for words. Kai is not only ridiculously handsome, but also dashing, kind and brave. Does he have any flaws? None come to mind. Every interaction between Tempest and Kai made my heart leap and rejoice. Swoon? I think so.

The only thing I found a bit frustrating was Tempest constantly reminding the reader that she does not want to be a mermaid. It's completely understandable. I don't know if I'd want to be a mermaid either, but saying it every couple pages became a bit tiresome.

Overall, Tempest Rising is an alluring and sometimes terrifying read. There's action, mystery, romance and even a few horrifying underwater creatures that may scare you off the beach for a couple days. For fans of Forgive My Fins and Siren, this is definitely a book you don't want to miss!

  9. This is a tough one, but for me I would become a mermaid. My lover has been with me through thick and thin, and I can't really say that about my family :( so I wouldn't have a problem giving them up and becoming a Mermaid. Love can really conquer all :)

  12. I'd definitely go with family. My mom's always been there for me, through times of both happiness and hardship. If my soulmate doesn't understand that, then we're probably not meant to be with each other in the first place.

  13. That is a very difficult question. I would have to choose my family. They have been there for me through everything... divorce, being a single mom, deployments. They support me no matter what. My family members are my best friends.

  18. I honestly don't think I could give up the chance to be a mermaid no matter the consequences. Not only could I experience a whole new way of life, but I could also know there is more out there. I would miss my family but at least my love would be there to help with the loneliness.

  19. What a choice? I don't know. I would have a hard time leaving my family but who could turn down love and being a mermaid? Do you think I would get over my fear of being under water if I were a mermaid? Hope so. :)

  20. I would choose to be a mermaid. With the one I love. :)
But I do love my family.. would there be a way I could visit them on land? Or maybe they could just come out to sea on a boat and I'll meet them at the surface or something.. haha
    What do mermaids eat?
It would probably be a dramatic diet change ... no more red meat, just lots of oysters and seaweed and ... sea cucumbers?

Ever since I heard about this book I've really really wanted it! Mermaids are the new thing.

  22. Wow, awesome question! I've actually thought about this before (I know, weird, right?) and I came to the conclusion that I would stay with my family. Why? because I believe that there are things you do for love, and then there are things that are just too much. Leaving my family forever (as opposed to just moving to a different country or something) is something I wouldn't do. I also believe that there are many different people out there who we are able to love if we just find them, so this plays into that also. :)

but i would stay with my family! i am just so close to them & couldnt even fathom leaving them! I look at it as hurting multiple people vs hurting one person ya know? & there are plenty of other fish...err...guys in the sea! lol

  25. Okay so here's the thing. I'm not really sure how much I believe in love. Then again, well I'm not exactly close to the majority of my family either. Ugh let's see, I guess I'd stay on land cause it'd be a heck of a lot easier to ditch my family if things go wrong than my mermaid lover. Thanks for the giveaway!

  30. This is a very interesting (and hard) question. While I think it would be the absolute coolest thing to become a mermaid when I turn seventeen, there are 2 problems I would have with it: 1) I would always miss my family, and I love them too much to leave them, and 2) I am terrified of water. Like, seriously terrified. Mostly because of a fear of sharks that I've had since I was little, but also because being out in the open water with no one around also terrifies me. So, I would choose to stay human and be with my family.
