A Darker Shade Of Magic Blog Tour

Welcome to the next stop in A Darker Shade of Magic Blog Tour. Think of it as a twisted magic school bus ride. During this tour, we'll follow Kell as he flits through Red, White, and Gray Londons. Where are we today? Let's see...

Red London!

During the tour, we were given the opportunity to ask the fabulous V.E. Schwab one question. Maybe I'm bias, but this is a pretty fabulous question if I do say so myself.

If all of your past characters participated in a magical Hunger Games, who would be crowned the victor?

Victoria: Probably Victor :p Haha, sorry, couldn’t resist, Victor/victor/also superpowers. But in the ADSOM world, it would probably be Delilah Bard. Even though Kell is one of the most powerful magicians in the world(s), and Lila is just a street-urchin-turned-thief, she fights dirty ;)

Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

About the author: V. E. SCHWAB's first adult novel, Vicious, debuted to critical praise and reader accolades. Schwab is the author of YA novels The Near Witch, The Archived, and The Unbound, and the Everyday Angel series for middle grade readers.

  5. Mostly the magic system, but the characters and humor helps too. I got Black London on the quiz, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I like your question. I agree Victor would so win. I'm not so sure about Lila yet.
